New to beard care and not sure whether you need oil, balm, or both? You're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we hear, and honestly, most product descriptions online don't explain it clearly, they just tell you to buy both.
Beard oil is a leave-in conditioner for your skin and hair. It's a blend of lightweight carrier oils, ours uses jojoba, fractionated coconut, argan, and squalane, plus natural scent oils. A few drops worked into the beard and the skin underneath does three things: softens coarse hair, moisturizes the skin so you avoid the flaking and itch that comes with dry beard skin, and adds a bit of natural shine. It absorbs fully, leaves no residue, and is the single most important product for anyone growing a beard longer than stubble.
Beard balm is a leave-in styling and conditioning product. It typically combines carrier oils with beeswax and butters (shea, cocoa) to create a thicker, semi-solid product. Balm conditions like oil does, but the wax content also gives you hold, so it's useful for taming flyaways, shaping your beard, or controlling a longer beard throughout the day. Think of it as oil's thicker, styling-focused cousin.
So which do you need?
If your beard is under a few weeks old, or you keep it short, oil alone is usually enough. It solves the itch and dryness problem, which is the main issue at that stage.
If your beard is longer, wirier, or you want more control over how it lays throughout the day, that's when balm earns its place, usually used on top of or instead of oil, depending on your routine.
A lot of guys end up using both: oil in the morning for conditioning, balm afterward for hold and shape. Neither one replaces the other, they solve different problems.
We get asked regularly whether we'll be adding a balm to the lineup. Short answer: it's on our radar. For now, our focus is on getting the oil formula exactly right, ingredient by ingredient, before we expand the lineup. When it's ready, you'll hear about it here first.
